I agree whole-heartedly with earthmagick’s stance that you don’t have to be vegetarian/vegan if you’re Pagan.  True, the meat industry sucks right now.  But to say you won’t eat meat becos it’s living, then go ahead and chomp away on plant life?  You do realise that plants are living as well.  And she made a beautiful point of saying not everyone can eat alternatively.  As a high-school senior going into college, I know I won’t have all the money I would need to buy organic and free-range.  I would like to eat that way everyday, but it simply isn’t an option for me right now.

As well, I’m a runner.  Yes, i know a few runners that are vegetarians, but I will point out that I am not jealous of their lifestyles.  They have to take many pills to replace what they simply cannot get from their diet.  And I know I wouldn’t be able to.  I tried, and ended up with anemia.  Also, I come from a family of hunters.  My dad hunts, my uncle, grandpa, cousins, all hunt.  I myself am learning how to hunt.  My grandpa also owns a herd of beef cattle.  So yes, I know the pain these animals go through.  And trust me, it doesn’t always sit right with me.  Which is why whenever I can, I buy local, organic, free-range, you name it.  I also give thanks for the life that was given to sustain mine.  That thanks may not be much in comparison to the torture the animal must have experienced before finally passing, but it’s what I can do for now, along with letters of complaint to the large meat companies.
