One of the most favorite and famous crystals throughout the world it is also one of the most abundant. Belonging to the quartz family it’s found throughout Brazil, Canada, Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Mexico, the U.S., Russia, and East Africa. Its beauty has made it the February birthstone. The coloring of the gem varies from pale lavender to a deep purple, in which is formed from the combination of trace amounts of iron and aluminum as well as natural or applied irradiation.

From the Neolithic people in Europe to the ancient Egyptians who used it to make beads and amulets to protect from poison, the gem has been prized not only for its beauty but energies as well. The Egyptians also used amethyst to guard against guilty and fearful feelings. It was also and still is viewed as a stone for royalty especially for its dark purple color which is a royal color.

Amethyst comes from the Greek word amethustos which mean “not drunken”. To the Greeks, they believed that amethyst would prevent intoxication, calm anger, and relieve frustrated passion. The Greeks also believed that the gem would protect one from the effects of drunkenness when drinking alcohol. This could be from when water is poured into a cup made out of amethyst it would give the appearance of the water to look like wine yet it didn’t give the drunken effect. An ancient Greek myth is also thought to have given the stone its name. Because of an insult Bacchus, the God of Wine, angered by the insult, declared that the first person he met would be eaten by his tigers. A young girl, Amethyst, who was on her way to the shrine of Diana to worship her was the one who met Bacchus. As the tigers sprang to attack her, the Goddess herself transformed the girl into a clear, transparent crystal. In remorse, Bacchus poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering which gave the gem its color. In ancient times wearing amethyst was also thought to protect soldiers from harm and give them victory in war. It was also used to assist hunters in capturing wild animals.
